Do you read?
I’m not talking about this column and newspaper, or the Facebook news feed some of you probably scrolled through to get here. Yes, that is reading, but it’s a different type of reading than I’m talking about.
Really, my question should be: Do you read books?
For me, the answer is … kinda. Let me explain …
Guys, do you ever walk in the house at 7 p.m. on a Monday and the woman in your life has commandeered the primary household TV for her ritualistic viewing of “The Bachelor”?
That means you find yourself in front of a tablet or a TV and can’t find anything good to watch, especially now that Monday Night Football is done for the season.

I stood on the roof of the old Elks Building in downtown Dickinson on Thursday night and said to someone, “Why don’t we do this more often?”
And I didn’t mean standing on top of one of downtown’s tallest buildings, though the view was pretty great. Of course, I’m talking about the Alive@5 free street concerts by Gwen Sebastian and Outlaw Sippin’, and everything else that went along with it, from the local law enforcement’s National Night Out to the beer gardens outside of The Rock, bouncy castles for the kids and some pretty delicious food vendors on First Avenue West.
Nights like that need to happen more often in Dickinson, and this city is getting to a point where it cannot only make that happen, it has a population that wants to see it happen.
Scranton native Kat Perkins got the leadoff spot and a lengthy introduction segment on Monday night’s episode of NBC reality singing show “The Voice.”
It was for a good reason, too.
Perkins sang “Gold Dust Woman” by Fleetwood Mac and got three of four coaches to turn their chairs. Country star Blake Shelton was, ironically, the lone holdout. Perkins began her career in country music before turning to the rock genre.
The 33-year-old singer’s love of rock influenced her choice. She picked Levine, the lead singer of rock band Maroon 5, to be her coach.
Perkins said, “This is crazy” while making her choice before picking Levine.
Levine, Usher and Shakira praised Perkins’ performance.
“The end of your performance, that note, that seared the entire audience,” Levine said.
Usher said that while he isn’t much of a rocker, he hoped to add to her talent.
“I could only imagine how incredible of a performer you could be with the type of encouragement and help to be great,” Usher said.
Shakira, a Grammy-winning Latin pop singer, all but begged Perkins to choose her.
“I want you desperately,” Shakira said. “… I’d like for you to be the architect of your own destiny.”
After leaving the stage, host Carson Daly asked Perkins why she picked Levine.
“His pitch. He was so determined to get the rocker chick,” Perkins said.

Every fall, a new TV season rolls around with an assortment of new choices and at least one show that you instantly fall in love with and almost as quickly gets canceled. Anyone remember “Lone Star”?
Well, here’s a list of possibly great, possibly horrible new shows you should at least try out this fall. But do it quick. Before they get the axe.
